From a mechanical point of view, the cambelt and timing chain exists to keep one half of the engine synchronised with the other half of the engine. The vital component provides synchronisation with the crankshaft’s rotation to ensure that the valves of the engine open and close at the right time.
Some vehicles will have a timing chain and others have a cambelt. Whichever is in place the function is the same but where they are located differs. Timing chains are found within the engine housing itself but cambelts are located outside of the engine.
